I started to practice Ashtanga in 1998 in Encinitas, California, its birthplace in the West. Some years later, a friend remembered me as the least flexible and most disembodied person who continued to show up to class. In hindsight and unsurprisingly, I was also mentally scattered and stressed.
The Ashtanga practice provided me the framework to build a steady, dedicated practice — and I built healthier habits, became less stressed, and more connected to a deeper place in myself.
I studied daily for more than 6 years with Tim Miller, the first Westerner certified to teach by Ashtanga master Pattabhi Jois. I completed Tim's First and Second Series Teacher Trainings held in Encinitas, and went on to assist his evening classes for more than 2 years.
I have also traveled to India several times to practiced with Pattabhi Jois and his grandson R. Sharath in Mysore.
These experiences brought home to me the fact that Ashtanga Yoga can take stressed-out, physically disconnected people, and help them learn to both move and feel better — calmer and more centered.
I have taught daily Mysore classes in Portland since 2007, and opened Portland Ashtanga Yoga in 2011.
This practice is a powerful agent of change, and I strive to present it accurately, safely, and with a sense of humor.
